Wellesbourne Cricket Club CHL Saturday 2nd XI v Moreton in Marsh on Sat 08 Jun 2019 at 1.30pm
Wellesbourne Cricket Club Lost 4 runs

Match report In a match reduced by rain to 35 overs, Wellesbourne IIs were just pipped at the post in an exciting run chase, losing at home to Moreton-in-Marsh by just 4 runs. Having won the toss, Wellesbourne skipper Chris Evans wisely chose to field first, as a further rain interruption seemed highly likely, although in the end it never materialised. And it was Evans (8-1-27-1) who struck first, clean bowling Stokesbury, beating him for sheer pace. The other opener soon went, deceived by an out-swinger from Ed Smith (8-1-27-2), which Furley could only edge behind to the waiting gloves of Matty Boyle. Smith was unfortunate not to repeat the deed, only to see a fast but fairly regulation edge put down at slip by the normally reliable bucket hands of Rick Alford. Replacing Evans at the far end, Ben Blakemore (5-1-20-1) soon despatched the no.3 Hurrell, when the latter drove straight to Jack Myatt at extra cover, with Myatt taking an identical catch when Mercer drove from the bowling of Alford, (8-1-16-2). Myatt’s good day continued as he trapped Williams lbw, the first of his three victims, to leave him with a good but perhaps expensive 3.5-0-34-3. When Smith clean bowled Baldwin for just 1, the middle order was more or less finished, leaving Neil Abbot to cunningly set up Townsend, using variations of flight and pace to hit the furniture.

Having posted just 124, Moreton soon showed they were far from beaten, when Jon Smith was trapped lbw, absolutely plumb, in the third over of the innings. Vadasz, Woods, Myatt and Abbott all made starts, but were all out in the teens, with only Evans (33) making a significant contribution with the willow. Boyle was controversially caught from what seemed a high full length delivery, and when the experienced Alford and veteran Rothwell were both bowled for ducks, the writing was on the wall. Last to fall was young Ed Smith, who was caught for a duck trying to get that last handful of runs.
