Wellesbourne Cricket Club CHL Saturday 1st XI v Alcester & Ragley on Sat 18 Aug 2018 at 1.30pm
Wellesbourne Cricket Club Won by 14 runs

Match report This match epitomised why cricket is such an intriguing game as leaders Wellesbourne completed a tense 14-run home win over relegation threatened Alcester & Ragley in a match where both sides had their chances to grab victory with many twists and turns and two or three stand out performances in both teams. Things could not have started better for Alcester when Bourne won the toss and batted as opening bowler Darren Kok struck twice in the first over having Ross Milton lbw with his third ball and bowling Myles Isted with his next. The visitors were chomping at the bit at this stage but they were then frustrated as Jamie Maynard and Darren Mole began a stand which rescued Bourne from disaster. Maynard, in particular, played some fine drives and with Mole also playing some nice shots these two pulled Bourne round with a fine stand of 108 before the visitors turned to spin and made the breakthrough as Maynard after taking 10 off the previous two balls was deceived by Adam Warbrick and was bowled for a superb 60. Warbrick then picked up the wicket of Mole with the score on 132 as he was caught at deep long on by Darren Turner for a fine 46 as Alcester began to get on top and fellow spinner Chris Dawson then got into the act bowling both John Edden and Travis Butcher. Warbrick then had Matt Woods caught by Ben Lee and when skipper Dave Barnett went bowled by Dawson for 26 the home side were struggling on 151 for eight in the 36th over. Tom Stephenson and Chris Evans tried to eke out the overs but Turner bowled Stephenson and Oliver Swinburn had Evans caught and bowled, leaving Bourne all out for 166 and three vital overs given to the away side. Dawson finished with 3-36, Warbrick 3-31 and Kok 2-40. Bouyed by their performance in the field Alcester seemed confident but Evans struck in the fifth over having Gary Strain caught by Mole and then on 31 as Alcester began to look set Evans produced a fine piece of fielding to run out Lee for 17. However, in a similar situation to Bourne’s innings, Kok and Warbrick began a good stand and with some solid batting they produced a partnership that seemed like they would take their side to victory before Stephenson had Kok lbw for 33 with the score on 93. However, it was the introduction to the attack of Milton and especially Sean Hopwood that turned the game again in Bourne’s favour. Milton struck first having Paul Cooke caught by Mole and then Hopwood removed Turner to a fine catch in the deep by Maynard. Chris Wiggett was caught at slip by Butcher off Milton, Ben Shuttleworth stumped by Barnett off Hopwood and when Lee Mellor went stumped by Barnett off Stephenson Alcester had slipped to 130 for eight. Warbrick though was still there and batting very well and with Dawson as his partner they began to inch closer to the winning line before an outstanding caught and bowled by Hopwood ended Warbrick’s innings of 60 and when Hopwood removed Dawson to a third stumping by Barnett, Alcester were all out 14 runs short in the 47th over. Hopwood ended with the fine figures of 4-27, Milton 2-18, Stephenson 2-43, Evans 1-25 as Bourne completed another vital win and they now lead Lapworth by seven points with two games to play and if Alcester continue to play as well as they did in this game they should avoid relegation.
