Wellesbourne Cricket Club CHL Saturday 1st XI v Long Itchington on Sat 09 Jun 2018 at 1.30pm
Wellesbourne Cricket Club Won

Match report Another excellent bowling performance from Wellesbourne ensured the champions winning run extended to five games with a 50-run win at Loxley Close against third placed Long Itchington and they now lead the table by 17 points. Being asked to bat first Bourne made a decent start against a good opening attack of Andy Wood and Joel Bennett with openers Myles Isted, in particular, and Ross Milton looking in good touch and they eased to 24 before Isted misjudged a drive and was caught at mid on by Tom Perks off Bennett for 20. Jamie Maynard then joined Milton and began his innings well with some fine drives but could not split the field and with the bowlers giving nothing away, both batsmen were dismissed when first Milton (13) was well caught and bowled by Wood and Bennett bowled Maynard and Bourne were 49 for three in the 20th over. Skipper Dave Barnett and Tommy Wheeler then came together and produced a fruitful partnership of 64 runs with some solid batting until both fell within a run of each other to the same combination as Wheeler went to a fine catch at long on by Lewis Dodds off Andrew Smith for 29 and Barnett went the same way for 36. Mole then quickly followed as Zak Aulakh bowled him and when John Edden, after one mighty six, holed out to the Dodds/Smith combination, Bourne were stuttering on 131 for seven. However, for the third time this season, Travis Butcher and Tom Stephenson produced a nice partnership of 36 before Butcher was caught by J Butler off Smith for 27 and it was left to Stephenson 18 not out and Chris Evans to see the home side to another bonus point on 175 for eight off their 45 overs. Smith 4-27, Bennett 2-24, Wood 1-24 and Aulakh 1-58. Itchington, who felt very pleased with their efforts in the field, would have fancied their chances of victory when they began their reply and openers Matt Goatley and John Lidster started well until Chris Evans grabbed two quick wickets having Goatley caught by Butcher with the score on 17 and followed up six runs later bowling Perks. Skipper James Clarke came in and with Lidster these two began to look comfortable until Clarke was given out lbw to Mole with the score on 49. Dodds then joined Lidster, who continued to hold the innings together, but Dodds (18) after smoting a couple of big sixes off Stephenson, the bowler got his revenge with the aid of a catch by Milton. Stephenson then had Tom Cooper smartly stumped by stand-in keeper Edden before Mole trapped Wood in front and at 75 for six Bourne had turned the game around in their favour. Lidster and Bennett then added 32 runs before Stephenson had Bennett (10) caught by Barnett and then Lidster’s brave innings ended when Butcher caught him off Stephenson for 40. This ended Itchington’s resistance and Evans returned to have Aulakh lbw and finally Sean Hopwood bowled Smith and the visitors were all out for 125. Stephenson finished with 4-40, Evans 3-36, Mole 2-19 and Hopwood 1-23.
