Wellesbourne Cricket Club CHL Saturday 1st XI v Long Itchington on Sat 15 Jul 2017 at 1.30pm
Wellesbourne Cricket Club Won

Match report Bourne snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in an amazing finish at Loxley Road when Long Itchington crumbled from what seemed an impregnable position of 169 for three in the 40th over to 187 all out in the 44th over. This win has kept Bourne at the top of the table still with a two-point margin over Exhall & Wixford making this week’s game between the two a vital encounter. After being put in to bat, Bourne’s openers Gary Maynard and Darren Mole gave their side a good start and had reached 63 in the 14th over before Maynard fell to a catch by John Lidster off Andy Smith for 20. Smith then had Dave Barnett caught behind by skipper James Clarke for 11 before another good stand between Mole and John Edden took the score to 141 in the 32nd over before Edden was bowled by Alex Jack for 34. Itchington had been bowling and fielding very well, completely belying their lowly league position, and runs were hard to come by and this continued as Bourne began to lose wickets with Mole the next to go two runs later for a fine 63, his maiden league fifty for the 1sts, when he was bowled by Joel Bennett. Jamie Maynard and Arron Snipe tried to push on adding 20 runs before Jack then picked up Maynard to a very good caught and bowled and on 180 Snipe fell for 24 to a catch off Bennett. Itchington then grabbed three quick wickets with Travis Butcher being run out, Ben Cherry bowled by Jack and Sean Hopwood going the same way to Bennett leaving debutant Anthony Pidgeon on 12 not out and Andy Rogers two not out and Bourne closed on 195 for nine in their 45 overs. Jack with 3-29, Bennett 3-40 and Smith 2-44. With the score probably 50 runs short of what was required it was imperative Bourne made some early breakthroughs and Cherry did just that having Lidster caught behind by Barnett and with Gary Maynard having Tom Perks the same way Itchington were 27 for two. However, Bourne then suffered the blow of losing the unfortunate Cherry as he broke down with an hamstring injury in his 6th over and had to leave the field. Snipe came on and removed Tom Cooper for 12 to a catch by Edden and at 52 for three Bourne were feeling quietly confident. It was then the fourth-wicket partnership of Jack and Clarke came together and these two began to take the game away from the home side, batting very sensibly and soon the score was ticking along and although Bourne were bowling well they could not dislodge the pair. Their stand had reached 117 when, with victory in sight, Snipe returned to the attack and had Clarke (48) well caught by Edden. This gave a Bourne a glimmer of hope and the introduction belatedly into the attack of Hopwood then snared the other vital wicket of Perks who fell to a good catch on the mid-wicket boundary by Jamie Maynard for an impressive 74 and suddenly Itchington were 174 for five and they soon became six down next ball when a fine piece of fielding off his own bowling by Hopwood resulted in the run out of Wood. Bourne now seemed like a team possessed and Itchington were in a daze as two excellent pieces of fielding by Edden resulted in the run outs of Steve Franks and Rajeskumar Raj. Snipe then struck the final two blows having Bennett caught and bowled and Smith caught by Edden for his third catch to complete a fine fielding performance from him and enabling Bourne to record this vital and improbable victory. Snipe 4-40, Hopwood 1-8, Cherry 1-14 and Maynard 1-30.
