Bretforton v Wellesbourne Cricket Club CHL Saturday 1st XI on Sat 21 Jun 2014 at 1.30pm
Wellesbourne Cricket Club Won

Match report There were four balls remaining of a tense and exciting game when Wellesbourne’s No. 9, 15-year-old John Edden, struck the winning boundary to give them an excellent three-wicket victory at Bretforton. With Bretforton’s ground looking in superb condition the home side won the toss and without hesitation batted first. Openers Brett Woods and Ashley Icke made a cautious start against good bowling from Chris Evans and Gary Maynard until the latter was well-taken at slip by skipper Jamie Maynard off Evans with the score on 27. Woods went next for 16, smartly stumped by Dave Barnett off Matt Dutton and Phil Davis (15) followed as Phil Rothwell caught him off Joe Jordan’s bowling and the home side were 57 for three. This brought Stuart Berry and John Clarke together and these two played well punishing anything loose until, with the score on 106, Clarke was bowled by Dutton for 31. Two wickets then fell on 122, as first Berry was caught behind by Barnett off Harry Jackman for 34 and Adrian Stanley was caught by Jamie Maynard off Dutton. Bourne continued to make inroads and the dangerous Joe Cafaero was next to go caught on the mid-wicket boundary by Gary Maynard off Jackman and then Jamie Maynard had Brett Hay caught behind by Barnett and the home side were 151 for eight. Alex Evans with 14 not out and Darren Key played out the final overs and Bretforton finished on 171 for eight off their 45 overs. Dutton 3-33, Jackman 2-30, Evans 1-21, Jamie Maynard 1-24 and Jordan 1-34 taking the wickets and they were backed up by a fine all-round fielding performance. In reply Bourne also made a steady start but on 20 Jackman was caught by Woods off Cafaero and 16 runs later Dutton followed lbw to Key. This brought Nathan Edwards in to join Gary Maynard and these two began to build a steady partnership taking the score to 71 before L Clarke bowled Edwards for 16. Jamie Maynard then joined his brother but after reaching a fine half century Gary Maynard was caught by Icke off Cafaero for 52 and when Jamie Maynard followed for 11 caught by Cafaero off Hay, Bourne were 103 for five and the game was evenly balanced. It was then the game swung in Bourne’s favour as Barnett and Tom Havers produced a match changing sixth-wicket partnership. Both played disciplined knocks and they took Bourne to the verge of victory until Havers holed out on the square-leg boundary to L Clarke off Cafaero for 29 with the score on 160. Six runs later Evans went lbw to Key but Barnett continued his fine knock and young Edden joined him to see Bourne home with Barnett finishing 33 not out. Cafaero 3-45, Key 2-34, Clarke 1-22 and Hay 1-24.
