Wellesbourne Cricket Club CHL Saturday 1st XI v Shipston on Stour on Sat 31 Aug 2013 at 13:30
Wellesbourne Cricket Club Won

Match report An outstanding all-round performance from Nathan Edwards set Wellesbourne on their way to a convincing seven-wicket win over local rivals Shipston and ensured they finished in third place in the Premier Division with the visitors coming fourth. With the funeral and thanksgiving service for Geoff Calcott taking place the previous day both sides and supporters observed a minute’s silence before play got under way and it was Shipston who won the toss and batted first. However they soon regretted this decision as they slumped to 30 for four. Chris Evans did the early damage by clean bowling Marcus Ireland in the first over and he picked up two more wickets having Matt Corby caught behind by Dave Barnett and Julian Morris well caught by Matt Stephenson. Gary Maynard then got in the act when he had John Walker caught by Barnett and Bourne were sensing an early finish. Jack Murphy and Jon Hartley began to rally the innings but the latter, having been dropped twice, became Edwards’ first victim when he was bowled for 10 with the score on 64 and Gary Betteridge went in a similar fashion soon after. Murphy continued to be main threat but after reaching a good 45 he became another clean bowled victim for Edwards and although Phil Hall batted bravely the innings was in disarray as Tom Stephenson then had Paul Cross caught by Tom Shearsby and Edwards snapped up his fourth wicket with a catch by Tom Stephenson to remove Tom Cox. Hall was the last man out for 27 being trapped lbw to Stephenson and the innings closed on 131. Edwards finishing with 4-16, Evans 3-19, Stephenson 2-55 and Maynard 1-24. In reply Bourne were soon 10 for two as Corby bowled Tommy Wheeler and Gary Maynard was run out. This proved to be a key moment as incoming batsman Edwards joined Jamie Maynard at the crease and Edwards began to unfurl some superb strokes as he completely dominated the Shipston attack and dispatched the bowling to all parts of the ground. With the score on 116 Corby forced Maynard to play on to his stumps for 16 which left Edwards to complete a remarkable 106 not out to give Bourne victory. Corby finished with 2-36. As the curtain closed on a lovely summer, congratulations go to champions Earlswood and overall it has been a decent season for Bourne finishing third for the second year running following winning the title in 2011 and being runners-up in 2010. Gary Maynard finished with excellent all-round figures of 727 runs and 36 wickets including eight 50s, scoring one each against eight of the nine sides in the division, Nathan Edwards totalled a fine 526 runs including three hundreds, Tom Stephenson took 32 wickets, Harry Jackman 26 wickets, Dave Barnett had 23 victims behind the stumps and Jamie Maynard took 13 catches.
