Wellesbourne Cricket Club CHL Saturday 1st XI v Exhall & Wixford on Sat 01 Jun 2013 at 13:30
Wellesbourne Cricket Club Lost

Match report “Catches win Matches” is an adage never more evident than in this game as Wellesbourne spilled seven chances which ultimately led them to a ten-run defeat at home to Exhall & Wixford. Having opted to field first, Bourne missed their first chance as early as the third over when Dave Mullett was dropped and the Exhall skipper, with his opening partner Matt Gwynn, compiled an opening partnership of 50 before Gary Maynard bowled Gwynn for 21. Bourne then began to peg the scoring rate back and with the total on 69, Joe Jordan removed Mullett for 30 with a catch from Harry Jackman and three runs later Jordan grabbed his second wicket when Tom Shearsby produced an outstanding catch at gully to remove Tom Simpson. Kiwi overseas Josh Smith was next to go when Maynard trapped him in front and at 81 for four off 20 overs Bourne were right back in the game. However it was at this stage, with the experienced Steve Kerby and Scott Carmichael at the crease, that Bourne‘s usually reliable fielding went to pieces as the latter was dropped four times and with the ground fielding also looking ragged, these two posted a 50-run partnership. Dave Barnett then produced a smart stumping off Tom Stephenson to get rid of Kerby for 21 and eventually Carmichael (29) went aerial once too often and Nathan Edwards held on, again off the bowling of Stephenson. Experience again led the way for Exhall as Leon Gates and Jon Simpson rallied, taking the score to 181, before Simpson was caught by Chris Evans off Shearsby‘s first delivery but next ball another dropped catch cost Bourne dearly as more vital runs were added. Gates went for 37 as Jackman had him well caught in the deep by Tommy Wheeler and B J Weston took the innings over the 200 mark before Jackman bowled him and they closed on 204 for nine off their 45 overs. Maynard 2-33, Jordan 2-37, Jackman 2-43, Stephenson 2-49, and Shearsby 1-7 taking the wickets. Against some very tight Exhall bowling, Bourne’s openers Gary Maynard and Wheeler got off to a steady start and for the third time this season they posted a half century partnership taking the score to 67 after 20 overs before Wheeler (18) was caught behind by Mullett off Kerby. Kerby then had his second victim when Jamie Maynard was caught at cover by Gates with the score on 80. Incoming batsman Edwards (19) started brightly and it was unfortunate when a mix-up resulted him being run out and two further wickets went with Richard Nicholls bowling Jackman and Shearsby went the same way to B J Weston and Bourne were 126 for five. However Gary Maynard, who was beginning to look in good form, found an ally in Barnett and these two upped the tempo and the home side were starting to look slight favourites until both were dismissed on 171. First, Barnett was bowled by Gates for 18 and finally Maynard’s innings perished when, attempting his third six, he found Carmichael on the deep mid-wicket boundary and he was out for an excellent 83 off the bowling of B J Weston. Phil Rothwell was then run out and although Evans and Stephenson tried hard to see Bourne home, Exhall’s disciplined bowling meant they were always too far behind and finally Evans was stumped off the last ball for 18 and the innings closed on 194 for nine. Kerby 2-28, B J Weston 2-30, Gates 2-38 and Nicholls 1-42 being the successful bowlers as Bourne were left to rue what might have been.
