Wellesbourne Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report Wellesbourne 192 for four
Elmley Castle 191 all out

Wellesbourne won by 6 wickets

Wellesbourne clinched the Premier Division title by one point on a
dramatic final day with an excellent and tense six-wicket victory over
Elmley Castle. With previous leaders Exhall & Wixford gaining 20
points from their victory over Ashton-under-Hill, Bourne’s return of
22 points overturned the one-point deficit they faced at the beginning
of the final round of matches to win the title for the first time
since 1993. Bourne owed their victory to an outstanding unbroken
partnership for the fifth wicket of 130 between Adam Kerrigan and Tom
Shearsby who came together with the home side in trouble on 62 for
four and these two played some superb shots in turning the game fully
in Bourne’s favour to reach the winning target. Earlier, after losing
the toss, Elmley had a setback in the second over when Pete Cross was
run out from a fine piece of fielding from Tommy Wheeler whose
underarm throw hit the stumps with the batsman well out of his ground.
Simon Corbett was joined by Ashley Hemming and these two played very
well taking the score to 61 before Corbett was caught by Dave Barnett
off Tom Stephenson for 21. After 20 overs Elmley were 101 for two and
Bourne were struggling to make a breakthrough until Gary Maynard
caught James Cawson for 10 off Jamie Maynard’s bowling and Hemming’s
fine knock of 55 ended when Tom Stephenson caught him at mid-wicket
off Jamie Maynard and Elmley had slumped to 114 for four. Bourne were
now on top and M Granacki was held at slip by Jamie Maynard off
Kerrigan, J Bailey was bowled by Jamie Maynard and Maynard again held
a fine slip catch off Kerrigan to remove G Howman and the visitors
were 143-7. With 13 runs added Jamie Maynard then grabbed his fourth
wicket by bowling W Bailey for 10. Neil Cooper (30) and Ian Woodford
(17) rallied the innings until Wheeler held a superb catch in the deep
off Stephenson to remove Cooper with the score on 185. With maximum
bowling points a necessity for the home side Woodford was bowled by
Gary Maynard with one ball remaining of the 45 overs and Elmley
finished on 191 all out. Jamie Maynard with 4-42, Kerrigan 2-9,
Stephenson 2-32 and Gary Maynard 1-36 being the pick of the bowlers.
With the news that Exhall had not gained their maximum bowling points
the sides were level when both second innings started but Bourne made
a poor start when Bailey bowled Wheeler and Gary Maynard was caught by
Granacki off Cooper for 13 and the home side were 16 for two. Jamie
Maynard and Kerrigan took the score to 54 before the former was caught
at slip by Hemming off Corbett for 12 and Barnett then followed the
same way and Bourne were 62 for four in the 19th over. Then came the
Kerrigan and Shearsby show with Kerrigan finishing on an excellent 62
not out from 89 balls and Shearsby a superb 81 not out from only 56
balls, a magnificent effort. Corbett with 2-52, Bailey 1-26 and Cooper
1-27 taking the wickets. With Exhall also losing wickets in their game
the celebrations began immediately the victory was obtained and Tom
Stephenson’s young side can feel immensely proud of their achievements
this season. Apart from the Premier Division title, they have also won
the Leamington and District Midweek League and Cup, they were the
winners of the Chris and Stuart Broad MND 6-a-side, they won their own
6-a-side competition and for good measure the 2nd XI won the Cotswold
Hills Fourth Division and the Shipston 20/20 Knockout Cup to complete
a clean sweep. Their playing record this season is outstanding but
also the team spirit in the club is a joy to see.
