Wellesbourne Cricket Club CHL Saturday 1st XI v Lapworth on Sat 04 Aug 2018 at 1.30pm
Wellesbourne Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets

Match report Wellesbourne’s quest to win their third consecutive Premier Division title took a severe setback with a three-wicket defeat at home to second placed Lapworth and the teams are now level on points with four games to go and with Lapworth facing an easier run in they look strong favourites now to win the league. Winning the toss Bourne took first strike but they soon slumped to 28 for three as Lapworth’s opening bowlers Sean Cross and Mark Haddon had them in trouble. Cross had Ross Milton caught behind by David Pugh and then removed Myles Isted to a smart slip catch by James Tiffin and when Haddon had Jamie Maynard lbw for 16 Bourne were struggling. Tommy Wheeler and Darren Mole carefully tried to restore the situation but Gohar Rehmann then had Mole (21) caught behind by Pugh. John Edden then joined Wheeler and again these two started to stage a recovery before Edden (13) went to a catch at long on by Hadden off James Mason and the home side were 92 for five. Wheeler then found an ally in Travis Butcher and it seemed these two might see Bourne to a respectable total but Mason then superbly caught and bowled Butcher for 20. With points being vital Bourne needed to bat out their overs with the loss of no more wickets but the innings then folded as James Tiffin bowled Barnett, Tom Stephenson was bowled by Nick Spence and Wheeler’s gallant innings of 46 ended as he was bowled by Tiffin and finally Sean Hopwood was bowled by Spence and Bourne were all out for 149 in the 44th over giving Lapworth five vital points and Bourne picking up only two! Spence 2-2, Cross 2-17, Tiffin 2-36 and Mason 2-38. With a modest total to defend it was imperative that Bourne made a good start but it was not to be as Cross and Jo Troth started well and they soon began to make inroads into the total before Troth was lbw to Chris Evans for 18. Pugh then joined Cross and although they survived a run out and a stumping they took the score to over 100 before Stephenson had Pugh caught by Barnett for 20. A couple of dropped catches by Bourne then proved pivotal but Hopwood took two quick wickets having Mason stumped by Edden and Comley caught at slip by Butcher as Bourne began to claw their way back into the game and when Milton bowled Tiffin for 13 and Stephenson bowled Mace the home side dared to believe the chance was theirs but when Cross fell for a match-winning 64 only two runs were required for victory and Sam Stafford struck the winning boundary to see the visitors home to a fine victory for Lapworth. Stephenson 3-45, Hopwood 2-26, Evans 1-18 and Milton 1-26.
