Alcester & Ragley v Wellesbourne Cricket Club CHL Saturday 1st XI on Sat 12 Aug 2017 at 1.30pm
Wellesbourne Cricket Club Won

Match report The continuous stream of traffic heading by the picturesque cricket ground of Alcester & Ragley on their way to the Battle Proms at Ragley Hall were given a tasty appetiser of their evening’s entertainment with a spectacular show of batting from Wellesbourne as the current league leaders set a new club record league score of 385 for six, and maybe a Cotswold premier record, and they continue to lead the Premier Division table by six points from Exhall with Norton Lindsey 11 behind with three games to go. Winning the toss and batting first Bourne made a superb start as openers Gary Maynard and Darren Mole tucked into the Alcester opening bowlers with gusto and soon both players were scoring at will and they reached 100 after only 14 overs. Maynard began to take the upper hand until the partnership reached 162 when after completing an excellent century he was caught at deep extra cover off the bowling of Steve Capron for 105. Mole soon followed for a good 52 when Capron struck again having him caught and on 179 for two Bourne well well set. Unfortunately for Alcester the Bourne batsmen never let up and Myles Isted and John Edden continued to keep the scoring rate going until on 244 Isted was caught at mid on off Bradley Jefferies for 23 and Edden (36) followed three runs later to a catch at point off Oliver Swinburn. It was at this point that Jamie Maynard and Arron Snipe came together and these two wreaked complete havoc on the Alcester attack as both batsmen were in full flow as the scoreboard rattled along. Snipe, in particular, was in awesome form, and boundaries were coming thick and fast as their partnership raced to 112 in only seven overs before Snipe after taking 28 off the first five balls from Jethro Powell, was stumped off the sixth by Dave Swinburn for a magnificent 74 off 28 balls. Jamie Maynard then went at deep mid-off to another boundary catch off Swinburn for 45 leaving Dave Barnett and Jonny Spence to see Bourne through to 385 for six. Capron bowled well for the home side, amongst the carnage, finishing with 2-36 off his 10 overs. Bourne then struck with the second ball of the Alcester innings as Gary Maynard had B Lee caught behind by Barnett and Maynard followed up bowling Dave Pilkington and the hosts soon found themselves 13 for two. Alcester then began to show a bit of spirit as Powell and Gary Strain began to rebuild the innings and took the total to 57 before Powell (16) was trapped in front by Tom Stephenson and one run later Sean Hopwood bowled Dave Swinburn. Unfortunately, soon after this dismissal, Hopwood had to leave the field with a suspected broken finger. Strain continued to bat well and with the assistance of P Dipple the score reached 95 before Dipple was caught by Jamie Maynard off Stephenson for 27 and then two more wickets fell with only four runs added as Thomas Wright was bowled by Edden and Stephenson had Jefferies caught by Jamie Maynard. Bourne now sensed an early finish to grab more bowling points but once more Strain stood firm and in partnership with Oliver Swinburn the score reached 162 before Strain’s fine innings of 84 ended with a smart caught and bowled by Mole. Mole then bowled Swinburn for 16 before Capron and George Guy took Alcester past the 200 mark and it was with one ball remaining of the 45th over that Gary Maynard bowled Guy to secure a vital final bowling point and the hosts were all out for 215 and in turn gained eight useful points in their quest to remain in the top division. Maynard finished with 3-18, Stephenson 3-43, Mole 2-32, Hopwood 1-33 and Edden 1-33. With 22 sixes struck in the game, 17 for Bourne, it was rumoured the perseid meteor showers had company later that evening!
