Wellesbourne Cricket Club CHL Saturday 1st XI v Earlswood on Sat 21 May 2016 at 1.30pm
Wellesbourne Cricket Club Won

Match report Sometimes a low-scoring game of cricket can be an exciting match and this was one of those, as two well-matched sides produced an enthralling encounter, despite a continuous drizzle which affected the majority of Wellesbourne’s innings, as the home side maintained their 100% start to the season gaining an excellent four-wicket win. Bourne skipper Dave Barnett won the toss and Earlswood took first strike and although Gary Maynard and Tom Shearsby started with two maidens Earls’ openers Stuart Reeve and Sardara Narotro looked in good form and began to build a solid platform to build a big score until Shearsby had Narotro leg before for 22 with the score on 38. Maynard then dismissed Marvin Rice the same way, before Shearsby picked up Reeve (31) to a catch by Jamie Maynard and Gary Maynard had Leon Everett caught superbly by a diving Jonny Spence and Earls suddenly found themselves 76 for four. Karl Everett and Arron Snipe tried to halt the slide but after adding 25 runs John Edden picked up two quick wickets having Everett caught behind by Barnett for 13 and Will Windeatt falling to another splendid catch by Spence. Bourne were now in the ascendancy and Spence picked up his third catch as Snipe fell for 26 off the bowling of Tom Stephenson and Jamie Maynard bowled Aussie overseas Harry Brookes. Stephenson then had Joe Pietrafesa stumped by Barnett before Jamie Maynard took the last wicket as James Thorne was caught by Barnett and Earls finished on 126 all out to complete a good all-round performance from the Bourne bowlers who all took two wickets apiece. Edden 2-12, Jamie Maynard 2-20, Stephenson 2-21, Gary Maynard 2-35 and Shearsby 2-37. With rain imminent and Earls opening bowler Brookes bowling at a brisk pace, Gary Maynard cover drove a four off the first ball before Brookes bowled him in the fifth over and one run later Tommy Wheeler was caught at square leg by Brookes off Narotro and the home side found themselves 16 for two. Spence decided attack was the best option and he soon helped himself to four boundaries but unfortunately lost Barnett caught behind by George Calkeld off Brookes before Brookes picked up his third wicket as Spence tried one hit too many and was clean bowled for 25. Bourne were now rocking on 51 for four, as Earls were looking to run through the rest of the batting order, and they needed someone to steady the nerves and up stepped Bourne’s overseas Adam Kerrigan and Jamie Maynard and these two gradually began to turn things around until Kerrigan mis-timed a pull and was caught at short mid-wicket by Karl Everett off Snipe for 21 leaving Bourne on 75 for five as Earls sensed victory. As the rain continued to drizzle, Jamie Maynard was joined by Harry Jackman and these two continued the good work and this partnership turned into a match-winning one with both players looking secure picking up ones and twos and Jackman hitting three boundaries in one over. Earls tried hard to break them, even having a change of ball and Maynard breaking his bat, until with three runs required and victory in sight Maynard was bowled by Pietrafesa for a hard-earned 30. Edden then took only one ball to hit the winning runs giving Bourne an excellent win, with Jackman finishing on 23 not out. Brookes finished with 3-47. Full marks must also go to umpires Steve Hartley and Rob Ebrey for staying out in the middle and keeping the game going.
