Match report
A superb all-round batting and fielding display, including nine catches, secured a comfortable 168-run win for Wellesbourne at Ragley Hall to maintain their slim hopes of winning the title. With the pitch not being covered during Friday’s deluge, Bourne were asked to bat first and surprisingly they found the going easier than expected as openers Gary Maynard and Tommy Wheeler were rarely troubled and soon were playing some fine shots. Maynard continued his recent good form and soon reached his half century before John Tose had him caught for 63 with the score on 119 in the 22nd over. Wheeler continued playing well before Bourne lost their second wicket when Nick Gabbett was bowled by Tose, who then followed up by bowling Wheeler for a good 63 and the visitors were 146 for three. This brought John Edden and Jamie Maynard together and these two also began to score freely and soon the boundaries were flowing with Edden hitting five sixes and Maynard three. Alcester’s bowling and fielding was now becoming ragged as they tried in vain to stop the flow of runs but with the stand worth 84 runs it was a mix-up between the batsmen that caused the next wicket as Maynard was run out for 48. Dave Barnett soon followed caught and bowled by J Powell before Edden was caught at long on off Tim Jackson for 47 and Bourne were 256 for six. However, there was no let-up for the fielding side as Harry Jackman hammered a quickfire 57 not out from 24 balls and with assistance from Tom Shearsby 10 not out took Bourne to a formidable 321 for six off their 45 overs. Tose finished with 3-51. In reply Alcester started well in pursuit of the large total with B Lee and D Pilkington scoring early boundaries before Lee fell to a catch by Edden off Gary Maynard for 17 and then Maynard had Pilkington (27) superbly caught at deep square leg by Chris Evans and the home side were 56 for two. Tom Stephenson then removed Tose to a catch from Jackman before Jackson and M Billicliff steadied the innings as the home side were chasing as many batting points as possible. However, on reaching 101, Billicliff fell to a catch by Edden off Stephenson for 24 and five runs later Jackman removed Adam Peachey. Bourne were now sensing an early finish but L Clark joined Jackson and they took the total to 137 before another fine catch from Evans off Stephenson ended Clark’s innings of 27. Bourne soon cleaned up the tail with Jackman having T Wright caught by Jamie Maynard, Stephenson took his fourth wicket, courtesy of a catch by Shearsby, to remove Powell and Jackman completed a fine all-round match for him taking the last two wickets as Steve Capron was caught by Gabbett and finally M Alderman was trapped lbw leaving Jackson unbeaten on 26. Jackman finished with 4-14, Stephenson 4-58 and Maynard 2-30. Gary Maynard’s innings took him passed 4,000 premier league runs for Wellesbourne.
