Wellesbourne Cricket Club CHL Saturday 1st XI v Bidford on Avon on Sat 02 May 2015 at 1.30pm
Wellesbourne Cricket Club Won

Match report Bourne had a comfortable 193-run win to start the new Marston’s Pedigree Cotswold Hills League season when newly promoted Bidford found their hosts too strong due to a fine all-round performance from last year’s runners-up. With the pitch and ground looking immaculate, Bourne were asked to bat first and they made a good start until Bidford’s overseas player Munyardzi had Gary Maynard caught behind by Dipple for 12 with the score on 22. Fellow opener, Bourne’s new Aussie overseas player Nick Gabbett, was then joined by Dave Barnett and these two began to build a fruitful partnership. Munyardzi bowled well for the visitors but Gabbett was quick to punish anything loose and Barnett batted superbly and they took the total to 99 when Gabbett was shell shocked when he was caught by Naylor off Rouse for 46. Barnett then built another good partnership with Harry Jackman and both players kept the scoreboard ticking along with some fine strokes until Barnett was surprisingly out being caught by N Edkins off Cooper for a fine 80. Bourne then lost three quick wickets when Munyardzi picked up two more victims having Jackman lbw for 38 and bowling Jamie Maynard and then Greeton removed Tom Shearsby. Bourne were now 202 for six but they found another batting star in 16-year-old John Edden who played an innings way above his years as he began to take the bowling apart, peppering the boundary at regular intervals in compiling an excellent knock of 69 not out. T Edkins picked up the wicket of Chris Evans and with Tom Stephenson making 11 not out Bourne closed on 278 for seven. Munyardzi the pick of the bowlers with 3-43. Bidford knew they had a tough target and so it proved as opening bowlers Evans and Gary Maynard bowled very well in tandem and they ripped out the top order. Evans started the rout having Rouse caught behind by Barnett and Maynard then bowled T Edkins. Evans had Dipple trapped in front and Maynard had Gretton again caught behind by Barnett and the visitors were in disarray on 48 for four. Munyardzi offered some resistance with 26 but skipper Stephenson then came on and proceeded to take four wickets for five runs. His first victim was Layton lbw, then he had Munyardzi caught in the deep by Shearsby and he caught and bowled Naylor. Jackman picked up Cooper caught by Gary Maynard and Stephenson completed the rout having W Edkins stumped by Barnett. Downey was unable to bat having had a nasty injury to his eye whilst fielding, fortunately he seemed to be fine at the close. Special mention must also be made to both umpires John Greenhill and Adam Bayes and the scorers Lynn Barnett and Steve Davey who did a sterling job on a bitterly cold day.
