Wellesbourne Cricket Club Lost

Match report Rain ruined a pulsating match as Fillongley ended Wellesbourne’s interest in this year’s Davidstow Village KO Cup. With 4.1 overs left and Bourne requiring 27 more runs to win a second deluge caused the abandonment and left the large crowd of spectators disappointed as neither side deserved to lose in such a way. Fillongley, veterans of this competition, were asked to bat first and they faced some tight bowling from Chris Evans and Gary Maynard, backed up by some athletic fielding, as Bourne kept the score to 21 off the first 10 overs. However, Fillongley’s openers Andy Carty and Chris Moore survived and began to assert themselves and with both players were looking very good, they took their partnership to 92 before Harry Jackman had Moore stumped by Dave Barnett for a fine 51. Next over, with 10 runs added, Tom Stephenson had Carty caught and bowled for 27 but Fillongley started to press on. J Jakeman and Kyle Taylor took their stand to 45 before Jackman bowled the former for 42 and Bourne were now well back in the game. Stephenson took two more wickets having Aaron Blackmore caught by Gary Maynard and C Davies caught by Evans and when Gary Maynard bowled Phil Hammond, Fillongley were 170 for six. Taylor took his score to 29 not out but lost two more wickets as Maynard had Andy Moore caught by Stephenson and Sam Skelding was run out off the final ball of the 40th over and Bourne were quite satisfied with their efforts as Fillongley finished on 189 for eight. Stephenson 3-49, Maynard 2-39 and Jackman 2-44. Bourne also made a cautious start but in the seventh over, with 22 on the board, Jackman (15) was caught at long on by Chris Moore off Stephen Gardner, who then followed up with two more wickets trapping Matt Dutton lbw and having Gary Maynard (14) caught by Chris Moore and Bourne were rocking on 39 for three. Again Bourne fought back with skipper Jamie Maynard joining Nathan Edwards at the crease and these two played well taking the score to 82 before Edwards was caught and bowled by Jakeman for 35. Barnett went next, caught by Andy Moore off Neil Stringer, and at 114 for five the game was in the balance with 76 required off 13 overs. Maynard began to play some fine shots including two sixes and with help from the ever-reliable Tom Shearsby these two were looking set to take Bourne home before the first stoppage for rain. Fillongley then made a vital breakthrough on 161 when Maynard was caught by Jakeman off Andy Moore for an excellent 57 and three balls later Moore had Darren Mole lbw. Evans then joined Shearsby but the rain arrived again and a possible grandstand finish was averted. Shearsby finished 19 not out and Gardner 3-32 and Chris Moore 2-12 took the bowling honours for Fillongley who let’s hope can go on and win the tournament.
