Wellesbourne Cricket Club CHL Saturday 1st XI v Earlswood on Sat 02 Aug 2014 at 1.30pm
Wellesbourne Cricket Club Lost

Match report Wellesbourne’s slender hope of reducing Shipston‘s lead at the top of the table has virtually disappeared as they slumped to a 49-run defeat at Loxley Road against Earlswood where they were given a batting masterclass of how to pace an innings. In a game reduced to 30 overs a side skipper Jamie Maynard asked the visitors to bat first and Bourne made an early breakthrough in the second over as Leon Everett was caught and bowled by Gary Maynard. Joe McGovern was joined by Tariq Mohammed and although McGovern played and missed many times they took the score to 64 before McGovern went for 25 caught at slip by Nathan Edwards off Tom Shearsby. It was when Craig Everett arrived to join Tariq at the crease that Earlswood began to play some superb cricket shots. Both players looked a class apart as they were soon peppering the boundary and running superbly between the wickets and although Bourne did not bowl badly the scoreboard was soon ticking along. It took a superb caught and bowled by Tom Stephenson to break the stand when he removed Everett for 39. Tariq received further help from incoming batsman Dave Smith who was soon up and running and these two took the score to 193 in the 28th over before Tariq’s excellent knock of 79 ended when he was caught in the deep by Edwards off Shearsby. Smith remained 44 not out and the innings closed on 209-4. Shearsby 2-49, Maynard 1-44 and Stephenson 1-44 taking the wickets. Bourne were then faced with a revised target of 189 off 27 overs which at seven an over was well within their reach if they batted sensibly and they made a quick start as Edwards continued his recent good form in racing to 33 in only the fourth over before being caught on the boundary by Will Windeatt off S Bussey. Gary and Jamie Maynard then tried to consolidate and were up with the run rate before Jamie Maynard was caught by Craig Everett off S Harris with the score on 56 in the 9th over. It was then the innings began to collapse as three wickets fell for the addition of eight runs. Bussey took two wickets in successive balls clean bowling both Gary Maynard (16) and Harry Jackman and Waqar Mohammed had Shearsby stumped by George Calkeld and Bourne were 64-5. However, Dave Barnett and John Edden began to rally the innings and although slightly behind the run rate they had reached 96 in the 18th over before Barnett was caught by Craig Everett off Tariq for 25. Earlswood then turned the screw and Tariq bowled Darren Mole and Edden was caught off Smith for 22 and although Chris Evans (12 not out) and Tom Stephenson tried hard the game was over. Smith had Stephenson caught for 16 by Leon Everett and Bourne finished on 140 for nine. Bussey 3-36, Smith 2-17, Tariq 2-27, Waqar 1-21 and Harris 1-38 taking the wickets and with Shipston’s game abandoned Bourne were left to rue their missed chance.
