Wellesbourne Cricket Club CHL Saturday 1st XI v Long Itchington on Sat 14 Jun 2014 at 1.30pm
Wellesbourne Cricket Club Won

Match report Catches win matches is an old cricketing adage and it proved the main reason Wellesbourne got home by 33 runs in a tight encounter with Long itchington, with two catches each by Mick Alexander and Jamie Maynard that would have graced any cricket ground. After being put in to bat Bourne made a steady start but with the score on 23 Harry Jackman was caught by James Clarke off Andy Wood and seven runs later Matt Dutton was trapped lbw by Alex Jack. Gary Maynard, looking in good form, was next to go for 33 caught at deep mid off by Steve Chapman off Jack and when Alexander went for 23 and Jamie Maynard departed for nine Bourne found themselves struggling on 79 for five and Itchington were sensing an early finish. However, Bourne then showed some character as they set about batting their 45 overs and Dave Barnett and Tom Havers began to rebuild the innings. Both players were sound in defence and it came as a surprise when Havers was bowled by Zach Autack for 13 with the score on 100. One run later Chris Evans went caught by Tom Crosthwaite off Chapman bringing 15-year-old John Edden to the crease and the youngster proved an able ally to Barnett taking the score to 128 before the latter was caught by Crosthwaite off Autack for 26. Edden was then joined by Tom Stephenson and again these two dug in and it was unfortunate when Edden was out for 14 in the penultimate over caught by Mitch Lowe off Chapman having taking the total to 158. Stephenson and Joe Jordan played out the final balls leaving Bourne on 167 for nine with Chapman 3-43, Autack 2-30, Wood 2-35 and Jack 2-39 taking the wickets. In reply Bourne‘s opening attack of Evans and Gary Maynard made life difficult for the early batsmen and after 15 overs they had only scored 18 for the loss of Crosthwaite superbly taken at slip by Alexander off Evans. Roger Eadon and Jack then slowly took the score to 43 before Jack was out for 24 in the 22nd over when Jamie Maynard held on to a smart catch at short mid wicket. Eadon’s patient innings of 26 was then ended when Jackman had him lbw for 26 and it was the next wicket of dangerman Lowe that gave Bourne the boost they needed when he fell to an outstanding catch from a full blooded drive at mid-off by Jamie Maynard off Stephenson for 13 and Itchington were 73 for four. It was soon 81 for five when Alexander held another super catch at slip off Jackman and the game was in the balance. Itchington then began to play more positively but on reaching 100 two wickets fell as Stephenson had Clarke lbw and Havers held a fine catch in the deep off Jackman to removee Steve Franks. Will Grindel and Chapman began to pick up a few runs before Gary Maynard returned and had the former caught by Evans for 15 and the end was in sight. Jordan removed Chapman to another catch by Evans and when Barnett caught Autack off Evans they were all out for 136. Jackman finished with good figures of 4-34, Evans 2-8 off 8.5 overs, Stephenson 2-42, Jordan 1-18 and Maynard 1-30.
