Wellesbourne Cricket Club CHL Saturday 1st XI v Exhall & Wixford on Sat 31 May 2014 at 1.30pm
Wellesbourne Cricket Club Lost

Match report Bourne crashed to a disappointing seven-wicket defeat at Loxley Close where visitors Exhall & Wixford took control from the moment they won the toss. With the weather not being kind in the last week the pitch was slightly damp and Exhall’s decision to field first was the only option. Steve Kerby and Josh Smith bowled well and Kerby, in particular, proved to be the thorn in Wellesbourne’s side as he proved virtually unplayable and took the wickets of Harry Jackman, Jamie and Gary Maynard in a fine opening spell which yielded 3-11 from seven overs. Bourne found themselves on 18 for three and fortunately the change bowlers were not so accurate and Nathan Edwards and Mick Alexander began to stage a revival. However, with Edwards looking in good form as he raced to 37, Jon Simpson clean bowled him and once more Exhall began to turn the screw. John Smith departed lbw to Simpson and Dominic Dann went to a catch off Leon Gates and Bourne were 75 for six. Alexander then found an ally in Dave Barnett but with the total on 97 Gates had Barnett caught behind by Scott Carmichael and without further addition BJ Weston changed his angle and got through Alexander’s defences and he was out for 37. Gates’ miserly spell ended with the fine figures of 2-15 off 10 overs which gave Chris Evans and Tom Stephenson some respite and these two batted sensibly in using up the 45 overs taking the score to 136 for eight. Kerby finished with 3-31, Simpson 2-14 and Weston 1-24. In their reply, Exhall seemed to have the better of the batting conditions and openers Matt Gwynne and Smith started very positively and, apart from the odd error, both players played very well, and they duly completed a century partnership before Smith holed out in the deep to Stephenson off the bowling of Joe Jordan for a fine 53 in a total of 110. Exhall then lost two more wickets in their pursuit, as first Simpson was held at slip by Alexander off Stephenson and four runs short of his half century Gwynne fell lbw to Gary Maynard. To sum up a bad day for Bourne the winning run came courtesy of a no ball and Exhall were home and dry. Stephenson 1-14, Maynard 1-25 and Jordan 1-45 were the Bourne wicket-takers.
