Shipston On Stour v Wellesbourne Cricket Club CHL Saturday 1st XI on Sat 22 Jun 2013 at 13:30
Wellesbourne Cricket Club Won

Match report Wellesbourne recorded a 39-run victory at London Road and have moved into equal second place in their pursuit of runaway leaders Earlswood. Batting first, Bourne’s openers Gary Maynard and Tommy Wheeler had 19 on the board after two overs before Wheeler was well caught behind by Andy Corby off a good delivery from Richard Bryan at the beginning of the third over. Jamie Maynard then joined brother Gary at the crease and although both gave a couple of chances they batted very well with both looking to score at every opportunity and after 20 overs the score had reached 100. They continued at a decent rate, with both passing their half centuries, to put Bourne into a strong position, but when the partnership had reached 136, Jamie Maynard was well caught by a tumbling Matt Corby off Julian Morris for 51. From this position a total in excess of 250 was in prospect but an over later with the score on 160, Gary Maynard was next to go when Marcus Ireland trapped him lbw for an excellent 79. At this point, Shipston began to drag themselves back into the game and wickets started to tumble. Ireland bowled Matt Dutton, Morris took his second wicket when Harry Jackman was stumped by Andy Corby and Nathan Edwards was bowled by Ireland and Bourne were suddenly 186 for six. Tom Shearsby and Dave Barnett tried to rebuild the innings but with the score on 203 two wickets fell, first Shearsby (12) was bowled by Bryan and then Chris Evans was run out by Jack Murphy. Luke Canning then took the last two wickets, having Barnett well caught behind by Andy Corby and trapping Joe Jordan in front and Bourne were all out for 208, losing their last nine wickets for 53 runs. Ireland with 3-33, Canning 2-15, Morris 2-27 and Bryan 2-43 taking the wickets. Faced with a total at least 50 runs short of what they thought they would have to chase Shipston made an awful start as they soon found themselves 16 for five. Gary Maynard began the rout with two wickets in successive balls when he had Andy Corby lbw and clean bowled Morris. Evans then followed up with the prize wicket of Matt Corby when he was clean bowled and Maynard had his third wicket when Ireland was trapped in front. The fifth wicket was a run out, the result of a superb throw from Wheeler, when Paul Cross was left stranded and an early finish was definitely on the cards. However Jack Murphy and Gary Betteridge had other ideas and carefully these two constructed an excellent stand of 92 with Betteridge, in particular, punishing any loose deliveries. Tom Stephenson then made the breakthrough when Murphy was well caught behind by Barnett for 38. Phil Hall joined Betteridge and after hitting two sixes, he was superbly caught on the mid-wicket boundary by Edwards off Jackman for 16 with the total on 127 and then 14 runs later Bourne grabbed the important wicket of Betteridge when Jackman had him stumped by Barnett for a fine 65. Dave Murphy and Bryan tried to keep the score ticking along but Edwards bowled the latter for 12 and Dave Murphy (10) was the last man out when Edwards caught him off Evans and Shipston fell 39 runs short. Maynard 3-25, Evans 2-20, Jackman 2-30, Edwards 1-23 and Stephenson 1-28 taking the wickets.
