Ashton-Under-Hill v Wellesbourne Cricket Club CHL Saturday 1st XI on Sat 27 Aug 2011 at 13:30
Wellesbourne Cricket Club Won by 10 wickets

Match report Ashton-under-Hill 145 all out
Wellesbourne 149 for 0

Wellesbourne won by 10 wickets

Match reduced to 30 overs per side

A superb unbroken opening partnership of 149 between Gary Maynard and
Tommy Wheeler enabled Wellesbourne to complete a 10-wicket win at
Ashton-under-Hill and importantly gain 22 points to reduce the deficit
at the top behind Exhall & Wixford to just one point with one game
remaining. With the game reduced to 30 overs per side Ashton batted
first and got off to a flying start as Bourne bowled and fielded
poorly in the opening overs with too many short pitch deliveries. R
Cooper and T Miles took the score to 46 before the former was caught
by Phil Rothwell off Chris Evans for 27. J Glazier was next in and he
continued the onslaught as Bourne were still struggling in the field
and they had reached 89-1 off 13 overs. However two runs later Glazier
was caught in the deep by Evans off Tom Stephenson and suddenly the
game began to turn Bourne’s way. D Wood was next to go for 16 with a
smart stumping from Dave Barnett off Stephenson and Stephenson then
had Miles caught and bowled for 11 and Ashton were 116 for four.
Wickets continued to tumble as Adam Kerrigan removed Elliot Seal with
an outstanding catch at deep cover by Tom Havers and Kerrigan then
bowled M Patel and Ashton were 126 for six. J Cooper then fell to a
catch by Barnett off Stephenson, J Haines was bowled by Kerrigan and
finally S Cope was caught by Stephenson off Kerrigan and with only 10
men the home side were all out for 145. Kerrigan 4-21, Stephenson 4-24
and Evans 1-28 being the wicket takers. Bourne’s main aim when batting
was to secure victory by losing as fewer wickets as possible and
Maynard showed his intentions with two boundaries from the first two
balls. This was just the start they needed and both Maynard and
Wheeler played some lovely shots and although Ashton used six bowlers
they could not break through and the Bourne openers were finding the
boundary at will and running the singles well and they saw their side
home to an emphatic victory in 22.5 overs to set up a nail biting last
game. Maynard finished on 72 not out and Wheeler 67 not out.
