Wellesbourne Cricket Club Lost by 49 runs

Match report Bretforton 265 for 7
Wellesbourne 169 for 7

BRETFORTON won by 49 runs

BRETFORTON once again proved a step too far for Wellesbourne as the
reigning champions inflicted a first defeat of the season on last
year’s runners-up. After being asked to bat first Bretforton were soon
into their stride with openers Adrian Witts and Brett Woods quick to
put away any loose deliveries but ’Bourne struck twice in quick
succession as Gary Maynard removed both openers courtesy of two fine
catches from Patrick Prasad and Tom Shearsby with the score on 27.
With a couple of catches going begging and the fielding looking ragged
’Bourne began to lose momentum and Jack Dell (31) and Stuart Berry
(47) rectified the situation before Matt Stephenson bowled Dell and
had Berry caught and bowled leaving Bretforton 114 for four. W Lloyd
and Phil Davis took the score to 160 before Stephenson grabbed his
third wicket when Lloyd was caught behind by Dave Barnett for 13. This
brought in Bretforton’s talisman Paul Jones and with Davis in fine
form they took the score to 234 before Maynard returned to have Davis
caught by Tom Stephenson in the deep for a fine 66. Jones continued to
find the boundary and his quickfire 52 was ended when Chris Evans
bowled him and the home side finished on a formidable 265 for seven.
Stephenson finished with 3-45, Maynard 3-55 and Evans 1-37.
Wellesbourne’s task looked daunting but Maynard struck the first ball
for four and hopes were high as Prasad was also quickly into his
stride but on 38 the latter was caught behind off Dell for 17. Jamie
Maynard joined his brother and these two took the score to 70 before
Gary holed out to Dell off Josh Radford for 43. Adam Kerrigan was next
in and with tight bowling and sharp fielding Bretforton began to turn
the screw and with rain imminent Kerrigan (17) and Maynard (29) both
fell trying to force the issue when the slow left arm of Alex Evans
forced both batsmen into rash shots. With the score on 120 off 30
overs the rain fell and after an eight-over break the revised target
meant 98 runs were required off only seven overs. This proved too
difficult but Neil Weston (13), Shearsby (18 not out) and Evans (20)
tried in vain before Bourne closed on 169 for seven. Evans finished
with 4-53 to complete a good victory for the champions.
