Wellesbourne Cricket Club Won by 91 runs

Match report
Wellesbourne won by 91 runs

WELLESBOURNE, hoping to go one better than last season’s runners-up
berth, got off to a fine start to the new season with a comfortable 91-
run success over promoted Shipston. Being put in to bat the home side
made a brisk start with openers Gary Maynard and Patrick Prasad both
looking in good form as they put on 52 for the first wicket. Maynard
was first to go when he was out caught for 31 and Jamie Maynard joined
Prasad in taking the score to 103 before Prasad was out for a good 47.
The scoring rate had dropped significantly with the introduction into
the Shipston attack of the two veteran slow bowlers Dave Murphy and
Dave Pyne who bowled their 20 overs for a combined total of only 62
runs. Pyne took the vital wicket of Maynard for 28 and Murphy snared
Dave Barnett in the next over to leave ’Bourne on 119 for four. Adam
Kerrigan, making his debut, and Tom Shearsby tried to rally the
innings but found run scoring difficult due to good field placement
and tight bowling. Shearsby went for 13 and Kerrigan followed soon
after for 26 as ’Bourne went to 156 for six and with only six overs
remaining Shipston were in the driving seat. However it was young
Nathan Edwards who gave the innings some much needed impetus with a
quickfire 34 and with Chris Evans chipping in with 17 the innings
closed on 211 for nine. Pyne with 2-34, Gary Betteridge 2-39, Neil
Harper 2-32 and Murphy 1-28 being the pick of the bowling attack.
Shipston were confident and needed a good start but it was the
Wellesbourne opening attack of Evans and Gary Maynard who turned the
game firmly into the home side’s favour with two excellent spells of
quick and hostile bowling. With only the third ball of the innings
Evans removed dangerman Spike Morris with a fine catch from keeper
Barnett and it was the same combination who then removed Jack Murphy
to leave Shipston on 19 for two. Maynard then got into the act with
the wickets of skipper Betteridge and Harper and Shipston were reeling
on 30 for four, a point from which they never recovered. Shearsby
trapped Jon Walker lbw and although six catches were missed and 23
wides bowled, wickets tumbled with Tom Stephenson and Kerrigan
grabbing a wicket apiece and Matt Stephenson wrapping up the tail with
3-7 with only Craig Robbins who made a spirited 31 showing the
required application as Shipston were all out for 120. Evans finishing
with 2-27 and Maynard 2-32 while Barnett completed a good performance
behind the stumps with three catches and two stumpings.
